Had a phone call from Asda, just now, of all places, but didn't get to the phone in time (assuming it was Asda, and someone didn't mask their real number, as it seems people can do anything, these days)...
Don't answer the phone giving either your number or your name. Don't give details of any names, marital status or dates of birth. Don’t engage in any conversation with them at all. Press a number on the telephone's keypad as if to simulate you've initiated a call trace and speak as if there is also somebody else in the room with you. If the caller asks "what's this number?" don’t give it and ask the caller "what number did you call?" Always Stay calm. Most nuisance callers may get pleasure out of getting an emotional response from you. If there's no reply after you say "Hello", do not continue speak and replace your handset or leave the phone off the hook and walk away for a few minutes, then replace the handset. Record the time of day and frequency of the calls to identify if there's a pattern. Always wait until the caller identifies themselves before talking. Use your answering machine to listen to and screen the incoming calls. If you are using an answering machine, please do not record your answer message that includes your name and phone number. Never record an answer machine message saying you're on holiday or out. Always try and use 1471 to get the phone number of the inbound nuisance call. Never ever ever give out your personal details to anyone you have not called first.
