With elections for the post coming up again (this year?), it's worth looking at how Surl has done in keeping his pledges...

WATCHING THE
COMMISSIONER
By law, the Commissioner must answer
to the Policing and Crime Panel, a
group of officials who reflect the
political make up of the county, plus a
couple of independent representatives.
To make sure I continue to reflect the
interests of the public, I will do more
than that. Here are a few of the things
I would do:
THE COMMISSIONER’S
FORUM
By April 2013, I will establish ‘The
Commissioner’s Forum, a group of up to 24
local people who are committed to making
the county a better place to live. I will seek
nominations from the media, business,
further and higher education, the voluntary
sector, traders and experts on priority areas.
The Forum will be encouraged to give its
views on key policies and appointments.
THE COMMISSIONER’S
FUND
Within six months of taking office, I will set-
up a charity called ‘The Commissioner’s
Fund’ to support individuals and groups that
would not normally attract main stream
funding. To start it off, I will set aside a
proportion of my salary.
COMMISSIONER DAYS
Twice a year I will have ‘Commissioner Days’
when you will be invited into police stations
and Police HQ to see what we do and why
we do it.
AND FINALLY......
I want the officers and staff of the
Gloucestershire Constabulary to police our
county with good humour, courtesy and
respect to all of us. They must be smart in
appearance and their uniforms distinctly
civilian in appearance.
------------------------------------------------
People can draw their own conclusion about the last three (is the end one even a pledge at all?), but as to the first, the Police & Crime panel taking place this Thursday is the same old same old, of elected politicians and 'representatives'. Surl has deemed this sufficient, nevertheless. I say he's failed to deliver 'more than that', and more so, he and his staff have ignored a Freedom of Information request which attempted to elicit an answer: Election pledges. Even Whatdotheyknow.com just get an automated response when they forward the request, though Surl maintains that he doesn't use such responses.
It's sad to think that come the elections, there still probably won't be any more attractive prospect to choose from, as only an idiot, or someone on the inside of policing/politics, would think of standing.
